The Smart Thermostat Pilot Program invites single family home owners in Vancouver to install a Nest, Honeywell Lyric, or Ecobee3 smart thermostat, provide energy data, and in exchange receive a $125 rebate for the purchase of their thermostat. As an added bonus, the first 100 qualified applicants are eligible to receive an additional $25 rebate!
As evidenced by the Greenest City 2020 Action Plan, COV is strategical focused on leading the world in green building design and construction. The Smart Thermostat Program is intended to provide COV a research study that will quantify the energy savings potential of smart thermostats and support understanding of consumer acceptance and barriers to adoption. Independent research studies in the United States (US), led by utilities, non-profits and technology manufacturers have indicated the potential for smart thermostats to provide annual energy savings for space heating and cooling in the range of 5 to 20%.
As such, smart thermostats are beginning to demonstrate a capacity in other jurisdictions to make energy efficiency both a desired option and effortless transition for consumers. Smart thermostats also have the potential to be a gateway, or door opening technology to engage residents on energy efficiency and be a first step towards undertaking other home energy improvements.
