Ecolighten & Energy Save New West in 2014 Profiles of Excellence

Through our Work with the City of New Westminster and Energy Save New West, Ecolighten is proud to be included in the 2014 Profiles of Excellence.

Published annually by the Royal City Record, the Profiles of Excellence highlights businesses, programs and services that are a mark of excellence in the local community.  This year, the New Westminster Electrical Utility is featured including its work in community energy efficiency with Energy Save New West.

As General Manager, Rod Carle states: “Today’s digital economy is really shifting the way utilities operate.  So the old traditional approach was that a utility would spend a lot of its time maintaining and operation its existing infrastructure.  Today, we’re moving towards more of a model in which we are an energy solutions provider in that we’re really focused on conserving and sustaining.”

With over 400 participants in the program since launching in 2013, Energy Save New West continues to grow and evolve with energy solutions for existing homes, businesses and multi-unit rental residential buildings.  This year, the program will see expansion into multi-unit strata residential solutions and high performance new homes.

As Program Coordinator, Ryan Coleman comments: “It’s really about looking at that energy component and finding creative ways to support New West residents and business with improvements to save money and reduce energy waste.”

In addition, the City of New Westminster is also exploring the possibility of providing clean, renewable, low-cost energy through a district energy system in the Sapperton area, as part of the redevelopment of the Royal Columbian Hospital site.  One option being explored is sewer heat recovery.

“We’re very fortunate in the Sapperton area because we can go in and set up this renewable type of energy very early in the life of development, rather than coming in after upgrading systems” said Norm Connolly, Community Energy Manager.
